EHC — Community Pharmacy

Services

A local Enhanced Service for community pharmacists to supply emergency hormonal contraception under a Patient group direction to female patients aged 13 and over. The aims of the service are to:

  • To increase knowledge of the availability of EHC through pharmacies
  • To improve access to emergency contraception and sexual health advice
  • To support the appropriate use of EHC to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies
  • To increase the knowledge of the risks associated with STIs and refer clients with a suspected STI to an appropriate service
  • To strengthen the local network of contraceptive and sexual health services to help ensure easy and swift access to advice.

Who to Refer

Young Females over the age of 13 who have had unprotected sexual intercourse in the last 72 hours.

Please note: when seeking/receiving advice in regard to patient care and making referrals, NHS Connecting for Health Information Governance standards and policies must be adhered to.

Who not to Refer

  • Males
  • Females under the age of 13
  • Pregnant females.
