Consultant Led Service

Dr Botros Fahmy - Pain Consultant

  • Management and treatment of chronic pain symptoms
  • Management of psychological and behavioural dysfunction associated with chronic
    pain (via links with psychology services)
  • Pharmacological treatment.

Referral Pathways in place enabling appropriate and timely referral with other specialists (i.e. Orthopaedic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, Psychiatrists, Rheumatologist & Neurologist).

Pain Service Provision

• Physiotherapy
• Acupuncture
• TENS Clinic.

Pain Intervention Provision

(Conducted at HHC or Manor Hospital)

Facet Joint Injections
Epidural & Nerve Root Injections
Nerve Block
Trigger point
Chemical Sympathectomy
Joint Injection
Soft Tissue Injection
Peripheral Nerve Block

Who to Refer

  • Aged 16+
  • Somatic pain (physical pain secondary to emotional distress) of benign origin that is intractable (present most of the time with varying intensity) duration greater than 6months, less than 1year that has not responded to other treatments
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Significant or increasing disability/distress due to chronic pain
  • Provision of x-rays/CT/MRI results
  • Registered with a Bedfordshire GP
  • Back Pain requiring injection

Please note: when seeking/receiving advice in regard to patient care and making referrals, NHS Connecting for Health Information Governance standards and policies must be adhered to.

Who not to Refer

  • Under 16 years of age
  • Acute Pain (However criteria does not exclude patient's with a acute exacerbation of their chronic pain).
